Compassion in Times of Conflict

The 17th and 18th centuries in Europe were marked by frequent wars and conflicts, which caused great suffering, poverty, and instability among ordinary people. Deeply moved by the misery of the poor, Cardinal de Rohan desired to respond pastorally to the urgent needs of his diocese.

He believed that women religious dedicated to charitable service could bring relief, hope, and healing to the suffering population. This conviction laid the foundation for a legacy of mercy that continues to this day.

The Birth of a Congregation

With this vision, Cardinal de Rohan decided to establish a new congregation in Strasbourg. He selected five young women and sent them to the Sisters of St. Paul of Chartres for formation and training in religious life and charitable service.

In 1734, these women formed a religious community known as the Congregation des Sœurs de la Charité de Strasbourg and began their ministry in a small, old hospital in Zabern. This house became the first Motherhouse of the new congregation.

"Inspired by the Vincentian spirit of charity, the congregation continues its mission of serving the poor and the suffering, carrying forward the vision and legacy of its founder."
